Anti-slip solutions for sewage treatment plants are an important part of workplace safety. Walkways over tanks, stairs on digesters and ladders in pumping stations are constantly damp. Algae, sludge, biofilm and ice quickly make surfaces slippery. On top of this comes corrosion of steel parts.
We help you make sewage treatment plants, waterworks and pumping stations more slip-resistant. GRP gratings, anti-slip sheets, rung covers and stair nosings can be combined in a targeted way. Many solutions are also suitable for retrofitting. On this page you will find typical hazard points and suitable measures.

Typical hazard points in sewage treatment plants and waterworks
- Walkways and bridges over clarifiers, aeration tanks and settling tanks
- Gratings with algae, sludge and biofilm
- Fixed ladders and stairs in pumping stations and shafts
- Outdoor stairs on digesters and tanks in frosty conditions
- Screen and grit chamber buildings with wet floors
- Filter and pump halls in waterworks with condensation
In sewage treatment plants, wet conditions are not the exception but the norm. In addition, much of the work is carried out alone or in small teams, for example during inspection rounds or on-call duty. A fall on a walkway over a tank or in a shaft can therefore have particularly serious consequences. When carrying out your survey, also consider the routes in darkness and in winter. Outdoor stairs and walkways at tanks in particular often freeze earlier than paved paths.
Suitable anti-slip solutions for sewage treatment plants
The following solutions can be used individually or in combination. For contact with drinking water or certain media, versions with corresponding test certificates are available on request.
Non-slip walkways for sewage treatment plants
Existing walkways can be retrofitted with GRP anti-slip sheets . The sheets are screwed onto gratings or metal plates. GRP does not rust and is suitable for permanently damp environments. Yellow surfaces improve visibility.
GRP gratings for wastewater facilities
Where steel gratings corrode, slip-resistant GRP gratings are an alternative. They are lightweight, do not need to be painted and are available in various slip resistance classes. Water and dirt can drain through the open structure.
Ladder rung covers for pumping stations
In pumping stations and shafts, fixed ladders are often wet and dirty. Ladder rung covers are fitted over the existing rungs and improve grip.
Anti-slip sheets for waterworks
Anti-slip sheets are also suitable in filter halls, at tanks and on platforms in waterworks. For areas with special hygiene requirements, we clarify suitability based on your specifications. Cutting to size and custom-made products are possible.
Securing stairs and handrails
Secure outdoor stairs at tanks and vessels with stair nosings or an outdoor stair tread cover. Additional grip is provided by anti-slip handrail protection.
Floors in operating buildings
In screen buildings, pump halls and laboratories, floors are often made of concrete or tiles. For concrete, slip-resistant floor coatings are suitable. For tiled surfaces, there is an anti-slip treatment for tiles that makes the surface grippier.
Selection: what matters
Slip resistance: Wet outdoor areas and walkways generally need high slip resistance. Annex 2 of ASR A1.5 (German Technical Rule for Workplaces on floors) assigns slip resistance ratings from R9 to R13 and, where applicable, a displacement volume to work areas. Testing is carried out in accordance with DIN EN 16165:2023 (the German edition of European standard EN 16165); older information refers to German standard DIN 51130. ASR A1.5 contains the requirements for floors in workplaces. Treat this information as guidance for your risk assessment.
Substrate: Gratings, chequer plates, concrete and timber require different fixing methods. Check the condition of existing structures before retrofitting.
Cleaning: Walkways are often cleaned with high-pressure washers. The surface should remain grippy and still be easy to clean.
Fixing: Sheets and rung covers are usually screwed. In permanently wet areas, mechanical fixing is often more reliable than bonding alone.

Frequently asked questions about slip protection in sewage treatment plants
How are non-slip walkways for sewage treatment plants achieved?
Existing walkways can be retrofitted with GRP anti-slip sheets. Alternatively, existing gratings can be replaced with slip-resistant GRP gratings.
Why GRP gratings for wastewater facilities?
GRP does not corrode like steel and is lightweight. This reduces maintenance and makes installation easier. The slip-resistant surface improves grip in wet conditions.
Do ladder rung covers for pumping stations fit every ladder?
Rung covers are available for various rung shapes and widths. Tell us the dimensions of your rungs so that we can select the right version.
Are anti-slip sheets suitable for waterworks with drinking water?
Special requirements apply to areas in contact with drinking water. Versions with corresponding test certificates are available on request. Please describe the exact area of use.
Would you like to make walkways, stairs or ladders in your sewage treatment plant or waterworks safer? Describe your facility to us. We will check which anti-slip solution is suitable.
