Anti-Slip Solutions for Construction Sites

Anti-slip solutions for construction sites keep workers and visitors safely on their feet on temporary traffic routes. Sites change every day: walkways run across formwork panels, steel plates or loose boards, and rain, mud, frost and dust quickly make these surfaces slippery. Site mats, anti-slip tape, stair nosings and ladder rung covers can be put in place quickly and moved as work progresses.

For ladders and scaffolding: Ladder safety shoes with a ladder grip zone (LG).

Matching protective equipment: S3 safety boots with an all-terrain sole – deep-cleated, self-cleaning tread for gravel, mud, ladders and scaffolding.

Slips, trips and falls are among the most common workplace accidents. On construction sites, changing surfaces, differences in level and bad weather add to the risk. Antirutschprofi supplies mats, tapes, profiles and coverings that can be installed quickly and relocated as the build progresses. We will advise you on the right combination for your project.

Construction worker with a traffic cone on site – anti-slip solutions for construction sites

Typical hazard points on construction sites

  • Temporary walkways over soil, gravel or formwork panels
  • Temporary site stairs made of timber or steel, especially at the step edges
  • Scaffold boards, platforms and transitions between scaffold lifts
  • Steel plates and covers over trenches and openings
  • Access to containers, site offices and welfare facilities
  • Cables and hoses running across walkways
  • Ladders and fixed ladders whose rungs become slippery when wet or dirty

Anti-slip solutions for construction sites

Slip-resistant mats for site walkways

Site and walkway mats on a roll can be laid over uneven ground and moved when needed. The profiled surface provides grip in wet and muddy conditions, and a high-visibility colour also marks out the route. This creates temporary non-slip walkways without permanently altering the ground. Find out more under anti-slip matting.

Robust mats for outdoor areas

Heavy outdoor mats are suitable for heavily used access points, such as in front of site cabins or material stores. They are designed for all weathers and let water drain away. Versions with test evidence of slip resistance are available on request. For details, see the non-slip outdoor mat.

Slip protection for temporary site stairs

Step edges are the critical point on any site staircase. Self-adhesive anti-slip strips increase grip on the treads. For heavily used timber and steel steps, screw-fixed profiles are also an option. You will find suitable products under anti-slip strips and stair nosings.

Anti-slip surfacing for scaffolding

On scaffold boards, platforms and transitions, a thin, well-bonded surface is what counts. Anti-slip tape can be cut to size and applied precisely to walking surfaces. Check that the surfacing and fixing method are compatible with the scaffold system, and contact the scaffold manufacturer if you have questions about approval.

Cable protectors for walkways

Power cables and water hoses are unavoidable on construction sites. A non-slip cable mat covers them and reduces the trip hazard on walkways, while also protecting the cables from damage.

Ladder rungs and access routes

Dirty rungs are a common cause of falls from height. Anti-slip ladder rung covers improve grip on ladders and fixed ladders. They are fitted over the existing rungs.

Choosing the right solution: what matters

Slip resistance: the German workplace rule ASR A1.5 ‘Floors’ and its Annex 2 provide guidance on the required rating. Outdoors and where slippery substances such as mud are present, higher ratings are usual. The specific requirement follows from your risk assessment.

Substrate: loose-laid mats suit soil, gravel and frequently changing routes. Tapes and strips need a sound, clean and dry substrate. Different products are suitable for timber and for steel.

Cleaning: site dirt quickly clogs tread profiles. Choose surfaces that can be cleaned with water or a broom. Regular inspection is part of keeping traffic routes safe.

Fixing: loose laying is flexible but can shift. Screw-fixed or bonded solutions last longer but take more effort to move. Weigh up how often the route layout will change as the build progresses.

FAQs: anti-slip solutions for construction sites

How can I set up temporary non-slip walkways on a construction site?

The easiest way is with walkway matting on a roll: it is laid out, secured where necessary and moved when the route changes. On firm ground, anti-slip strips can be used as well.

Which slip-resistant mats are suitable for site walkways?

Weather-resistant mats with a profiled surface that lets water drain away are the best choice. Heavier versions are an option for high-traffic areas. We can advise you based on your ground conditions.

How can temporary site stairs be made slip-resistant?

Self-adhesive anti-slip strips on the treads and stair nosings on the step edges have proved effective. There are dedicated solutions for steel stairs with chequer plate or grating.

Which anti-slip surfacing is suitable for scaffolding?

Thin anti-slip tape that can be cut to size, or coverings applied to the walking surfaces, are usually the best option. Check compatibility with the scaffold system with the scaffold manufacturer beforehand.
