Making Industrial Floors Non-Slip

Smooth hall floors are a common cause of slips. Oil, water, dust or worn surfaces significantly reduce grip. If you want to make your industrial floor non-slip, you do not always need to replace the floor. It is often enough to retrofit the surface in a targeted way.

We offer solutions for existing floors: anti-slip coatings, tapes, mats, sheets and markings. They can be used across the whole surface or only at hazard points. This lets you improve slip resistance exactly where it is needed.

Production hall with marked traffic routes – making an industrial floor non-slip

Typical hazard points on industrial floors

  • Smooth or polished concrete floors, especially when wet
  • Areas around machines with oil, cooling lubricant or hydraulic fluid
  • Hall doors and entrances where rain and snow are carried in
  • Ramps and slopes, e.g. at loading docks
  • Wash areas, cleaning zones and wet areas
  • Worn coatings on heavily used traffic routes

Suitable solutions for making industrial floors non-slip

Making smooth concrete floors slip-resistant with coatings

An anti-slip floor coating increases the roughness of the surface over a large area. It is suitable for halls, warehouses and production areas. A load-bearing, properly prepared substrate is required. Versions with test certificates for chemical resistance are available on request.

Anti-slip tapes for targeted areas

For walkways, ramps and workstations in front of machines, anti-slip tapes are a quick solution. They are bonded to the cleaned floor and secure exactly the zone where people walk or stand.

Non-slip flooring

Where the surface is badly damaged, Non-slip flooring can cover the old floor. This is a refurbishment without replacing the floor: the subfloor is retained and the walking surface is renewed.

Anti-slip mats for workstations

At standing workstations and machines, anti-slip mats provide grip and can be moved if required. For areas with forklift traffic or heavy loads, there are heavy-duty anti-slip mats.

Anti-slip sheets for ramps and heavily used routes

GRPanti-slip sheets are screwed or bonded and are suitable for ramps, platforms and crossovers with high mechanical loads.

Marking traffic routes

An slip-resistant floor marking separates footpaths from vehicle routes and increases grip at the same time. This combines slip protection and route guidance. It helps above all in halls where people and industrial trucks use the same areas.

Selection: what matters

slip resistance

ASR A1.5 “Floors” (German Technical Rule for Workplaces) and its Annex 2 provide guidance on which slip resistance rating (R9 to R13) and which displacement volume (V4 to V10) is recommended for a work area. Testing is carried out in accordance with DIN EN 16165:2023 (the German edition of European standard EN 16165); older certificates often refer to German standard DIN 51130. If you improve slip resistance retrospectively, the solution should match the rating intended for your area.

Substrate

Concrete, screed, tiles or existing coatings behave differently. Check load-bearing capacity, moisture and soiling. For tiles, an anti-slip treatment can be an alternative.

Cleaning

A rougher surface often requires adapted cleaning. Clarify in advance whether machine cleaning is used and which cleaning agents are used. Otherwise the effect may diminish over time.

Fixing

Coatings are applied, tapes and coverings are bonded, sheets are screwed or bonded, mats are loose-laid. With forklift traffic, edges and adhesion are particularly important. Loose mats should be secured against slipping, for example with an anti-slip underlay. Also check whether transitions to the adjacent floor form trip edges.

How your enquiry works

  1. Describe the situation: Tell us about the affected surfaces, steps or rungs, the substrate and the ambient conditions. Photos and rough dimensions help with the initial assessment.
  2. Agree the solution: We suggest suitable products, versions and fixing methods. We clarify any test certificates required at the same time.
  3. Receive a quote: You receive an individual quote with dimensions, quantities and version. You can then decide at your leisure.

Frequently asked questions: retrofitting industrial floors to make them non-slip

Can I retrofit an existing industrial floor to make it non-slip without removing it?

Yes, in many cases. Coatings, tapes, coverings or mats are applied to the existing floor. A load-bearing substrate is required. We will work out with you which option is suitable for your floor.

How can I make a smooth concrete floor slip-resistant?

For large areas, an anti-slip coating is usually suitable. For individual walkways or workstations, tapes or mats are often simpler. The choice depends on load, soiling and cleaning.

How do I know whether I need to improve slip resistance retrospectively?

Indications include near misses, visible wear or a change of use, such as new machines involving oil or water. The basis is your risk assessment. ASR A1.5 and its Annex 2 serve as guidance.

Is refurbishment without replacing the floor durable?

That depends on the product, substrate and load. Well-prepared surfaces and suitable cleaning extend durability. Check the surface regularly and renew heavily used areas as required.
