Slip Protection for Wind Turbines

In a wind turbine, service technicians move on fixed access ladders, platforms and in the nacelle. Moisture, condensation, oil and grease quickly make these surfaces slippery. Targeted anti-slip measures in wind turbines reduce the risk of slipping where a fall has particularly serious consequences.

We offer slip-resistant solutions that can be retrofitted to existing installations: rung covers, anti-slip sheets, gratings and anti-slip strips. The aim is safe access during maintenance and inspection – without costly modifications to the tower and nacelle.

Coastal wind farm – slip protection for wind turbines

Typical hazard areas in wind turbines

  • Fixed access ladders in the tower with smooth or worn rungs
  • Rest and maintenance platforms made of sheet metal or grating
  • Nacelle floors with oil, grease or hydraulic fluid residues
  • Condensation on tower walls and platforms when temperatures change
  • Transitions between ladder and platform as well as access and exit hatches
  • Outdoor stairs and access points at the tower base exposed to wet, leaves and ice

Wind turbine anti-slip: suitable solutions for tower, platform and nacelle

Retrofitting slip-resistant rungs in wind turbines

Existing fixed access ladders can be retrofitted with rung covers made of glass-reinforced plastic (GRP). The covers are placed over the rungs and fixed. The gritted surface improves grip, and the yellow colour makes the tread point clearly visible. Details of shapes and dimensions can be found on our page on ladder rung covers. Important: retrofitting does not replace inspection of the ladder and should be taken into account in your risk assessment.

GRP ladder covers for wind energy

GRP ladder covers are lightweight and corrosion-resistant. This is an advantage in the tower, as material is often carried by hand. Different profiles are available for square and round rungs. We manufacture special sizes for unusual rung geometries as custom-made products.

Anti-slip sheets for wind turbines

For platforms, walking surfaces and nacelle floors, GRP anti-slip sheets with an embedded hard grit surface are suitable. They are screwed or bonded onto existing plates or gratings. The load-bearing structure is retained, and the walking surface gets a new, slip-resistant finish.

Non-slip maintenance platforms

Where platforms are newly built or gratings replaced, slip-resistant gratings made of GRP or steel are an option. Open gratings let liquids drain away and reduce standing water. For chequer plate, we also offer an anti-slip coating for chequer plate .

Anti-slip strips for edges and transitions

Secure hatch edges, step edges and short transitions quickly with self-adhesive anti-slip strips. They are also suitable for marking trip hazards. Under heavy mechanical loads, a screw-fixed solution is often more durable.

Access points and stairs at the tower base

Outdoor stairs at the tower base are exposed to weather, leaves and frost. This is where outdoor stair tread covers and stair nosings help, specifically securing the tread and the step edge.

Selection: what matters

Slip resistance

ASR A1.5 “Floors” (German Technical Rule for Workplaces) and its Annex 2 serve as a guide to the required slip resistance. It is stated in ratings from R9 to R13, tested according to DIN EN 16165:2023 (German edition of European standard EN 16165); older certificates often still refer to German standard DIN 51130. With oil and grease in the nacelle, a high rating usually makes sense. The specific classification is determined by your risk assessment.

Substrate

What matters is what the solution is mounted on: chequer plate, grating, coating or ladder rung. The profile, load-bearing capacity and condition of the substrate determine which product and fixing method are suitable.

Cleaning

Coarse surfaces grip well but also trap dirt. Clarify how and with what the surfaces are cleaned. Versions with corresponding test certificates for chemical resistance or fire behaviour are available on request.

Fixing

Bonding is quick and requires no drilling, but needs a clean, load-bearing substrate. Screw fixing is often the more robust choice under high loads and vibration. In wind turbines, any modifications to the structure should be agreed with the turbine manufacturer or operator.

How your enquiry works

To suggest a suitable solution, we proceed in three steps:

  1. Describe the situation: You tell us about the affected surfaces, steps or rungs, the substrate and the ambient conditions. Photos and rough dimensions help with the initial assessment.
  2. Agree the solution: We suggest suitable products, versions and fixing methods, and clarify any test certificates required at the same time.
  3. Receive a quotation: You receive an individual quotation with dimensions, quantities and specifications. Then you can decide at your leisure.

Frequently asked questions about anti-slip in wind turbines

Can I retrofit slip-resistant rungs in wind turbines without replacing the ladder?

In many cases, yes. Rung covers are placed over the existing rungs and fixed. The prerequisites are suitable rung dimensions and an intact ladder. We will clarify whether the retrofit is suitable for your ladder based on dimensions and photos.

Which anti-slip sheets for wind turbines are suitable for nacelle platforms?

GRP anti-slip sheets with a hard grit surface, screwed or bonded onto plates or gratings, are usually used. The choice depends on contamination, load and substrate. Versions with test certificates for fire behaviour are available on request.

How can maintenance platforms be made non-slip where oil leaks occur?

Non-slip maintenance platforms are achieved with a rough surface offering high slip resistance and, where possible, open gratings with displacement volume. In addition, leaks should be eliminated regularly. Anti-slip products do not replace cleaning.

Can GRP ladder covers for wind energy also be used offshore?

GRP is inherently corrosion-resistant. Whether a version is suitable for saltwater and UV exposure depends on the product. Versions with corresponding test certificates for saltwater resistance are available on request.
