Anti-Slip Solutions for the Food Industry

Anti-slip solutions for the food industry are a key health and safety issue. Water, grease, blood, flour dust and cleaning agents quickly make floors in production, cutting and filling areas slippery. On top of this come condensation in cold rooms and frequent wet cleaning. Slips, trips and falls are therefore among the most common types of accident in these businesses.

We help you to eliminate hazards in a targeted way. Whether slip-resistant coating, anti-slip mat, GRP sheet or stair nosing: the right solution depends on the area, the substrate and the cleaning concept. On this page you will find an overview of typical problem zones, suitable products and the most important selection criteria.

Commercial kitchen with stainless steel surfaces – anti-slip in the food industry

Typical hazard areas in food businesses

  • Cutting and processing areas with grease, blood and meat residues on the floor
  • Wet areas at washing-up, washing and cleaning stations
  • Cold rooms and freezer rooms with condensation and frost formation
  • Transitions between areas with different floor coverings
  • Stairs, landings and platforms at filling and packaging lines
  • Commercial kitchens and canteens with splash water and food waste
  • Loading docks and goods-in areas with moisture coming in from outside

Suitable anti-slip solutions for the food industry

The following product groups can be used individually or in combination. For areas with food contact, versions with corresponding test certificates are available on request.

Slip-resistant floors for food production

For large areas, slip-resistant floor coatings are the right choice. Aggregates in the coating create a grippy surface. The grit size determines how high the slip resistance is and how easily the floor can be cleaned. Coatings for hygiene areas are available in versions with test certificates on request.

Non-slip floors in meat processing

Large quantities of fat and tissue residues accumulate in cutting areas. Here, displacement volume matters as well as slip resistance. A non-slip floor covering with a profiled surface can absorb residues without the walking surface becoming slippery straight away.

Anti-slip mats for commercial kitchens

In kitchens and at dishwashing lines, anti-slip mats are a flexible solution. They can be lifted for cleaning and moved as required. Open structures allow water to drain away. Make sure they have bevelled edges so that no new trip hazard is created.

GRP anti-slip sheets for platforms and walkways

On platforms, walkways and landings, GRP anti-slip sheets have proven their worth. Glass-reinforced plastic does not rust and is also suitable for damp environments. The sheets are screwed or bonded onto existing surfaces.

Securing stair edges

Stairs on production lines are often made of sheet metal or grating.. Stair nosings secure the front edge of the step and make it more visible with a contrasting colour.

Anti-slip strips for specific spots

For smaller areas, ramps or transitions, self-adhesive anti-slip strips are ideal. They can be applied quickly and used precisely where they are needed.

Selection: what matters

Slip resistance: Annex 2 of ASR A1.5 (German Technical Rule for Workplaces on floors) assigns slip resistance ratings from R9 to R13 to work areas and, where necessary, a displacement volume from V4 to V10. These values are determined according to DIN EN 16165:2023 (German edition of European standard EN 16165 on slip resistance testing); older test certificates often still refer to German standard DIN 51130. ASR A1.5 requires slip-resistant floors in workplaces. Use these regulations as a guide and align the requirements with your risk assessment.

Substrate: Tiles, concrete, epoxy resin, stainless steel or grating require different solutions. For pre-coated floors, we recommend a compatibility test.

Cleaning: Cleaning in the food industry is frequent and intensive. A very coarse surface provides plenty of grip but is harder to clean. Clarify in advance which cleaning agents and methods you use.

Fixing: Depending on the area, self-adhesive, screw-fixed or loose-laid solutions make sense. Loose mats make cleaning easier, fixed sheets stay permanently in place.

How your enquiry works

  1. You describe the area, the substrate and the type of contamination, ideally with photos and dimensions.
  2. We suggest suitable products and clarify any open questions on slip resistance, cleaning and fixing.
  3. You receive an individual quotation, including for cut-to-size pieces and custom-made products.

Frequently asked questions about slip protection in food businesses

When does slip resistance R13 V4 make sense in a food business?

R13 is the highest slip resistance rating, V4 the smallest displacement volume. This combination is suitable for areas where there is a lot of slippery substance but only a small amount of material needs to be absorbed below the walking surface. The values that apply to your work area can be found in Annex 2 of ASR A1.5 and in your risk assessment.

Which non-slip floor is suitable for meat processing?

Meat processing usually requires high slip resistance and a displacement volume. Profiled coverings, coarse-grit coatings or GRP sheets are possible solutions. We will be happy to advise you on your choice.

Are your products food-safe?

For areas with food contact, we offer versions with corresponding test certificates on request. Please tell us the specific area of use.

Are anti-slip mats for commercial kitchens easy to clean?

Many mats can be lifted and cleaned separately. How well this works depends on the material and structure. Tell us about your cleaning process so that we can suggest suitable versions.
