Stair Nosings for Safe Steps

Stair nosings – also known as step edge profiles or stair edgings – are prefabricated angle profiles that are bonded or screwed to the front edge of a stair tread. They perform three tasks at once: they create a permanently slip-resistant tread surface exactly where the foot lands, they mark the step edge with high contrast, and they protect the edge from mechanical wear. This makes them one of the most cost-effective ways to retrofit existing indoor and outdoor stairs for safety.

Why the step edge determines stair safety

Stair accidents rarely happen in the middle of the step. Two moments are critical: slipping when walking down, when only the front part of the shoe touches the step, and missteps when the edge is not clearly visible. Both causes are located directly at the front edge of the step – and that is exactly where a nosing comes in.

  • When walking down, much of the body weight rests on a very small contact area at the edge.
  • Worn, polished or damp edges are the first to lose their grip, because they are subjected to the greatest stress.
  • With uniform colouring, the steps visually merge into one another – especially against the light, at dusk and for people with impaired vision.
  • Retrofit profiles improve grip and visibility in a single step, without structural changes to the stairs.

Design and materials

A stair nosing consists of a carrier material and a slip-resistant surface. The combination determines load capacity, resistance and field of application.

Carrier materials

  • Glass-reinforced plastic (GRP): corrosion-free, electrically non-conductive, UV- and weather-resistant, resistant to many chemicals. The first choice for outdoor stairs, industry, the water industry and marine environments.
  • Aluminium: lightweight, dimensionally stable and durable – typically with corundum inserts or a gritted coating. Proven in buildings with heavy foot traffic.
  • Stainless steel: for hygiene-sensitive areas and high mechanical loads, for example in food processing.
  • Rigid plastic and rubber: low-cost solutions for indoor stairs with moderate use, often with an elastic tread zone.

Slip-resistant surfaces

  • Mineral grit with aluminium oxide or silicon carbide for maximum grip for shod feet.
  • Finer grit grades for areas that are mopped or where gloves and clothing come into contact with the surface.
  • Textured, grit-free surfaces for barefoot and wet areas.
  • Photoluminescent or reflective edge strips for poorly lit stairwells and escape routes.

Types at a glance

  1. Angle profile (L-shape): covers the tread and the riser at the edge. The classic retrofit solution, also providing edge protection.
  2. Flat profile / tread edge strip: sits on the tread only, where the riser must remain free or the installation height is limited.
  3. Profile with contrast edge: with a separate colour strip, e.g. yellow on black, for maximum visual guidance.
  4. Grating nosing: specially shaped to be clamped or screwed onto grating stair treads.
  5. Profile for timber stairs: with adapted screw spacing so that fixing does not split the wood.
  6. Photoluminescent profile: with a long-afterglow strip for escape and rescue routes.

Slip resistance, standards and marking

The decisive factor in selection is which requirement applies at the place of use. The main applicable rules are:

  • German standard DIN 51130 – slip resistance ratings R9 to R13 for workrooms and work areas where footwear is worn. For outdoor stairs, ASR A1.5 (German Technical Rule for Workplaces on floors) generally specifies R11 or R10 with displacement volume V4. In the case of heavy soiling, oil or ice formation, a higher rating may be advisable according to the risk assessment.
  • German standard DIN 51097 – classes A, B and C for wet barefoot areas such as swimming pools, showers and changing rooms.
  • ASR A1.5 – requirements of the Technical Rule for Workplaces for floors and traffic routes, including the slip resistance of stairs.
  • ASR A1.3 and DIN 4844 – safety signs and markings, including yellow/black marking of hazard points.
  • DIN 32975 – visual contrasts for barrier-free design; relevant for the luminance contrast of step markings.
  • DIN EN 16165:2023 – the German edition of European standard EN 16165, which brings together the recognised test methods for determining slip resistance, including the ramp test and pendulum tester.

Stairs must be designed so that they can be used safely. Treads must be slip-resistant; the front edges of the steps must stand out clearly from the rest of the floor covering.

Typical applications

  • Outdoor stairs at office, production and warehouse buildings exposed to rain, leaves, frost and road salt
  • Steel and grating stairs at plants, silos, tanks, platforms and walkways
  • Escape stairwells and secondary stairs with poor lighting
  • Retail and public areas with high footfall
  • Stairs in food businesses, kitchens and wet areas
  • Residential and care settings where sure footing and clearly visible edges are particularly important
  • Agriculture and forestry, workshops and vehicle access steps

Installation in five steps

  1. Check the substrate: Steps must be load-bearing, level and free of loose material. Broken edges are filled beforehand.
  2. Clean and degrease: Completely remove dust, oil, moss and cleaning agent residues and allow the surface to dry thoroughly.
  3. Measure and cut: Profiles are cut to the width of the step; a small gap at the sides is recommended so that water can drain away.
  4. Fix: Bond with a suitable construction adhesive, screw with countersunk fixings, or combine both. Outdoors and under heavy use, mechanical fixing is preferable.
  5. Press down and allow to cure: Observe the adhesive’s application temperature and curing time, and do not load the stairs until full strength has been reached.

One advantage over structural measures: the retrofit is carried out section by section during ongoing operations, without closing the entire stairwell and without the mess or drying times of a coating.

Selection criteria – the key questions before ordering

  • Indoors or outdoors, dry or permanently wet?
  • Is the stair used with footwear or barefoot?
  • Which rating is required – R class or barefoot class?
  • What are the steps made of: concrete, steel, grating, timber, tiles?
  • How heavy is the foot traffic, and is there vehicle or transport traffic?
  • Is there chemical exposure, e.g. from oils, cleaning agents or road salt?
  • Is a contrast strip, a photoluminescent version or a particular colour required?
  • What installation height is permissible so that no new trip hazard is created?

Comparison with other solutions

Stair nosings are one of several ways to make stairs safer. Which is right depends on the condition of the steps.

  • Anti-slip strips are the quickest and cheapest solution, as long as the steps themselves are intact and level.
  • Stair tread covers cover the entire tread and are suitable when the step surface is already damaged or worn.
  • Nosings sit in between: they secure the critical edge in a targeted way, protect it from further wear and mark it at the same time.
  • Anti-slip floor coatings make sense when a seamless, full-surface solution is required and the area can be closed off while the coating cures.

Cleaning and maintenance

  • Sweep or rinse with water regularly; otherwise coarse-grit surfaces trap dirt and lose grip.
  • Outdoors, remove leaves, moss and algae – they are a frequently underestimated cause of slips.
  • Check fixings annually and retighten loose screws.
  • Heavily worn individual profiles can be replaced without working on the entire staircase.
  • Check the contrast effect regularly: a clogged or faded marking no longer serves its purpose.

Conclusion

Stair nosings secure exactly the spot where most stair accidents begin. They combine slip resistance, visible edge marking and edge protection in a single component, can be retrofitted quickly during ongoing operations and require little maintenance for many years. For existing stairs, they are therefore one of the most effective measures relative to the effort involved.

Frequently asked questions about stair nosings

Which material is suitable for outdoor stair nosings?

GRP, aluminium and stainless steel with a slip-resistant surface are particularly suitable for outdoor use. Where road salt and moisture are present, GRP has the advantage of being corrosion-free.

How wide should a stair nosing be?

The profile should make the front edge of the step clearly visible and cover enough of the tread. We recommend the width to suit the step, use and substrate.

Can stair nosings be fitted to timber stairs?

Yes. There are profiles for timber stairs that are screwed or bonded. Check beforehand that the timber is sound and dry.

Do nosings also help people with visual impairments?

High-contrast profiles make the step edge clearly recognisable. This is particularly useful in public buildings, clinics and care homes.
