Ladder safety shoes with a ladder grip zone (LG): secure footing on fixed ladders, leaning ladders, scaffolding and platforms – tested to EN ISO 20345:2022.
Falls from ladders are among the most serious workplace accidents, and many of them start with a foot slipping off a rung. Ladder safety shoes marked LG (ladder grip) have an outsole whose waist area between ball and heel is profiled to improve grip on ladder rungs and steps. The pronounced heel helps stop the foot sliding forwards, and the slip-resistant outsole (SR) provides additional grip on wet or oily rungs. Suitability always depends on the condition of the ladder and the workplace risk assessment.

How to recognise a good ladder safety shoe
- LG marking to EN ISO 20345:2022 – the only standardised statement on suitability for ladders.
- Pronounced heel and profiled waist – grips the rung and prevents the foot slipping forwards.
- Torsionally rigid sole – spreads the pressure of the narrow rung, so the foot tires less.
- High leg for frequent climbing – stabilises the ankle.
- SR slip resistance – grip even on wet and oily surfaces; add CI for cold conditions and HRO for hot surfaces.
- Scuff cap (SC) – an overcap protects the toe when kneeling on scaffold boards and roofs.

What does LG mean on safety shoes?
LG stands for ‘ladder grip’ – an additional marking under EN ISO 20345:2022. It confirms that the sole has a profile and heel in the waist area that give a secure hold on ladder rungs.
Who needs to wear ladder safety shoes?
Anyone who regularly uses fixed ladders, leaning ladders or scaffolding – for example in scaffolding, roofing, wind energy, maintenance or warehouse logistics – should wear LG-marked footwear. The final choice of PPE is based on your risk assessment.
Shoes or boots for ladder work?
Boots are the better choice for frequent, prolonged climbing and on scaffolding, because the high leg gives better ankle stability. For occasional indoor ladder work, lightweight low-cut LG shoes are sufficient.
Is a ladder safety shoe enough on slippery rungs?
Not always – the shoe is only one side of the equation: LG footwear does not replace other fall protection measures, and its suitability depends on the condition of the ladder and your risk assessment. Slippery, dirty or icy rungs should also be retrofitted with anti-slip rung covers (R13).
