Winter safety boots for cold conditions, cold stores, snow and ice: cold-insulated (CI), lined and slip-resistant – keeping feet warm and sure-footed on ice, slush and frozen floors.
Cold numbs the feet and hardens soles – both increase the risk of slips and falls. That is why winter safety boots combine a cold-insulated sole (CI marking) with a warm lining, waterproof uppers and an outsole that stays flexible and grippy even in sub-zero temperatures. To test cold insulation under EN ISO 20345, the shoe is conditioned at –17 °C, and the temperature inside the shoe may only drop by a limited amount.

What to look for in winter safety footwear
- CI cold insulation: essential for freezer stores, cold stores and outdoor work in winter.
- Warm lining: thermal lining (Primaloft®) for very cold, damp conditions; wool lining for dry cold.
- Waterproof (S7S or WR): a membrane keeps slush and wet out – wet feet lose heat particularly quickly.
- Cold-flexible, slip-resistant sole (SR/SRC): stays flexible in sub-zero temperatures; HRO rubber is also heat-resistant and abrasion-resistant.
- Ladder grip zone (LG): secure footing on ladders and ramps – important on icy fixed ladders and dock levellers.
- Leg height and fastening: a high leg keeps snow out; dial-lace fastenings and pull-on boots can be operated even while wearing gloves.

FAQs about winter safety boots
What does CI mean on safety footwear?
CI stands for ‘cold insulation’ – the sole is insulated against cold. Testing is carried out under EN ISO 20345 at –17 °C. Safety footwear for freezer stores and outdoor work in winter should always carry the CI marking.
Which safety boots are suitable for freezer stores?
Cold-insulated (CI) boots with thermal lining and a high leg make the best freezer safety boots. For chilled food areas with hygiene requirements, there are white models that can be wipe-disinfected and have a CI sole (e.g. DD-BS-CA-B0502-BWA).
What is the difference between S3 and S7S in winter?
The main difference is waterproofing: S7S boots are waterproof (membrane, whole-shoe tested), making them better suited to slush and wet conditions, while S3 models are water-repellent and sufficient for dry cold.
Do winter safety boots help on ice?
Yes, to a degree – a cold-flexible, slip-resistant sole significantly improves grip, but it is no substitute for spikes on sheet ice. Combine the boots with gritted paths and slip-resistant surfaces on stairs and ramps.
