Slip Protection on Construction Sites

Construction sites change every day. Routes run over formwork panels, steel plates or loose boards. Rain, mud, frost and construction dust quickly make these surfaces slippery. A well-thought-out anti-slip concept for the construction site ensures that workers and visitors have a safe footing even on temporary traffic routes.

Trips, slips and falls are among the most common workplace accidents. On construction sites, changing surfaces, differences in level and bad weather are added to the mix. Antirutschprofi offers mats, tapes, profiles and coverings that can be deployed quickly and relocated as construction progresses. We will advise you on the right combination for your project.

Typical hazard points on construction sites

  • Temporary walkways over soil, gravel or formwork panels
  • Temporary site stairs made of timber or steel, especially at the step edges
  • Scaffold decks, platforms and transitions between scaffold levels
  • Steel plates and covers over trenches and openings
  • Access to containers, site offices and sanitary facilities
  • Cables and hoses running across walkways
  • Ladders and fixed ladders whose rungs become slippery when wet or dirty

Suitable anti-slip solutions for construction sites

Slip-resistant mats for site walkways

Construction site and walkway mats on the roll can be laid on uneven ground and relocated as required. The profiled surface provides grip in wet and muddy conditions. A conspicuous colour additionally marks the route. This creates temporary non-slip walkways on the construction site without permanently altering the ground. Find out more under Anti-slip mats.

Robust mats for outdoor areas

For heavily used access points, for example in front of site containers or at material stores, heavy outdoor mats are suitable. They are designed for the weather and allow water to drain away. Versions with corresponding test certificates for slip resistance are available on request. Details can be found under Outdoor anti-slip mat.

Slip protection for temporary site stairs

Step edges are the critical point of every site staircase. Self-adhesive anti-slip strips increase the grip of the tread surface. For heavily loaded timber and steel steps, screw-on profiles are also an option. You will find suitable products under Anti-slip strips and Stair nosings.

Anti-slip covering for scaffold areas

On scaffold decks, platforms and transitions, a thin covering with good adhesion is essential. Anti-slip tapes can be cut to size and applied specifically to walking surfaces. Check whether the covering and fixing are compatible with the scaffold system. If you have questions about approval, contact the scaffold manufacturer.

Cable mats for walkways

Power cables and water hoses are unavoidable on construction sites. A non-slip cable mat covers them and reduces the risk of tripping on walkways. At the same time, it protects the cables and hoses from damage.

Ladder rungs and climbing routes

Dirty rungs are a common cause of falls from height. Ladder rung covers improve grip on ladders and fixed ladders. They are fitted over existing rungs.

Selection: what matters

slip resistance ASR A1.5 “Floors” (German Technical Rule for Workplaces) and its Annex 2 serve as guidance for the required slip resistance rating. Outdoors and where slippery substances such as mud are present, higher ratings are usual. The specific requirement follows from your risk assessment.

Substrate: Loose mats are suitable for soil, gravel and frequently changing routes. Tapes and strips need a load-bearing, clean and dry substrate. The suitable products differ for timber and steel.

Cleaning: Construction dirt quickly gets lodged in profiles. Look for surfaces that can be cleaned with water or a broom. Regular inspection is part of keeping traffic routes safe.

Fixing: Loose laying is flexible but can shift. Screwed or bonded solutions hold permanently but are more laborious to relocate. Consider how often the route layout changes during construction.

Frequently asked questions about anti-slip on construction sites

How can temporary non-slip walkways be set up on a construction site?

The easiest way is with walkway mats on the roll. They are laid out, secured if necessary and relocated when the route changes. On firm ground, anti-slip strips can also be used.

Which slip-resistant mats are suitable for site walkways?

Weather-resistant mats with a profiled surface that allow water to drain away are suitable. For heavily loaded areas, heavier versions are an option. We will advise you based on your substrate.

How can temporary site stairs be given slip protection?

Self-adhesive anti-slip strips on the treads and stair nosings on the step edges have proven effective. For steel stairs with chequer plate or grating there are dedicated solutions.

Which anti-slip covering is suitable for scaffold areas?

Usually thin anti-slip tapes or coverings that can be cut to size and applied to the walking surfaces. Clarify compatibility with the scaffold system with the manufacturer in advance.
