GRP Fixed Ladders to EN ISO 14122-4

Fixed ladders provide access to tanks, shafts, roofs, masts and plant – often in places where moisture, chemicals or salt air quickly attack steel. Ladders made of glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) do not rust, do not conduct electricity and, with anti-slip rungs, remain safe to climb even when wet.

Retrofitting an existing ladder? For existing steel or aluminium ladders we offer anti-slip ladder rung covers. Matching protective equipment: ladder safety shoes (LG).

Benefits of GRP fixed ladders

Corrosion-resistant

no rust in wastewater treatment works, chemical plants, offshore and food production facilities

Electrically non-conductive

suitable for areas with electrical installations

Lightweight

easy to transport and install, even without heavy lifting equipment

Slip-resistant

rungs with a high-grip surface, can be retrofitted with R13 rung covers

Low-maintenance

no painting or galvanising required

Standards and requirements

Fixed ladders on machinery and plant are designed to EN ISO 14122-4; among other things, the standard specifies rung spacing, widths, safety cages and rest platforms. Whether a safety cage or a fall-arrest system is required, and from what height, depends on the standard, the risk assessment and the place of use. In Germany, the German statutory accident insurance guidance DGUV Information 208-032 additionally provides advice on selecting and using fixed ladders; in other countries, the relevant national regulations apply.

Typical applications

Vessels, silos and tanks

Shafts and basins in wastewater treatment works and waterworks

Roof access and plant platforms

Wind energy, offshore and port facilities

Chemical and process plants

Frequently asked questions about GRP fixed ladders

How long can a GRP fixed ladder be?

Individual ladder sections are available up to 6 m in length; longer ladders are supplied in two parts. The height from which rest platforms or a safety cage are required depends on EN ISO 14122-4 and your risk assessment.

Why GRP instead of steel or aluminium?

GRP does not rust, is resistant to many chemicals and to salt water, does not conduct electricity and is considerably lighter than steel. This reduces maintenance effort and installation costs, especially in damp or aggressive environments.

Can I make an existing ladder slip-resistant?

Yes. For existing fixed ladders there are anti-slip GRP rung covers (R13), which are fitted over the existing rungs and secured. The minimum dimensions of the ladder must still be maintained.

Which shoes are suitable for fixed ladders?

Safety shoes with a ladder grip zone (marked LG) provide additional grip on rungs. You will find a selection under ladder safety shoes.
