Anti-Slip Solutions for Offshore and Shipbuilding

On offshore platforms and ships, walkways are constantly wet. Spray, rain, oil and algae growth make decks and gangways slippery, while sea motion and wind make walking safely even harder. Anti-slip solutions for offshore and shipbuilding improve grip on these surfaces and support your health and safety measures.

We offer slip-resistant products for decks, walkways, stairs and ladders: GRP anti-slip sheets, gratings, rung covers and anti-slip coverings. Many of them can be retrofitted to existing surfaces so that the load-bearing structure is retained.

Offshore platform at sea – offshore anti-slip

Typical hazard areas on platforms and ships

  • Ship decks with water, ice or oil on the walking surface
  • Walkways and gangways between modules, platform and vessel
  • Gratings with a smooth or worn surface
  • Companionways, stairs and fixed access ladders with wet steps and rungs
  • Work areas at winches, cranes and pumps with lubricants
  • Transitions, thresholds and edges that are easily overlooked in a swell

Offshore anti-slip: suitable solutions for deck, walkway and stairs

Anti-slip sheets for offshore platforms

GRP anti-slip sheets with an embedded hard grit surface are screwed or bonded onto steel plates or gratings. GRP is lightweight and corrosion-resistant. Walkways thus get a new, grippy surface without having to replace the substructure. Versions with corresponding test certificates for saltwater resistance or fire behaviour are available on request.

Slip-resistant GRP gratings in shipbuilding

Where gratings are newly installed or replaced, slip-resistant gratings made of GRP are an alternative to steel. Open gratings let water drain away and reduce standing water. For potentially explosive atmospheres, versions with corresponding test certificates for ATEX requirements are available on request.

Anti-slip covering for ship decks

For closed deck areas, an anti-slip floor coating or a non-slip floor covering are options. On chequer plate, anti-slip coating for chequer plate. Which option fits depends on the substrate, the load and the cleaning regime.

Non-slip walkways on offshore platforms

Non-slip walkways on offshore platforms are usually created by a combination of a grippy walking surface, secured edges and clear marking. Self-adhesive anti-slip strips and slip-resistant floor marking make edges and routes visible.

Ladders and companionways

Fixed access ladders can be retrofitted with GRP ladder rung covers . For stairs and companionways, stair nosings are suitable, securing the step edges and making them visible.

Special dimensions for ships and platforms

Decks, hatches and walkways often have individual dimensions. We manufacture cut-to-size pieces and moulded parts as custom-made products to your specifications.

Selection: what matters

Slip resistance

ASR A1.5 (German Technical Rule for Workplaces on floors) and its Annex 2 serve as a guide for work areas. It distinguishes slip resistance ratings from R9 to R13 and displacement volumes from V4 to V10, tested according to DIN EN 16165:2023 (German edition of European standard EN 16165); older certificates sometimes refer to German standard DIN 51130. With oil, water and dirt on the walking surface, a high rating often makes sense. Please clarify on a project basis whether these rules apply to your ship or platform.

Substrate

Sheet steel, chequer plate, grating or aluminium require different solutions. Check condition, corrosion and load-bearing capacity before retrofitting.

Cleaning

Salt, oil and fouling must be removed regularly. Coarse surfaces grip well but are harder to clean. Versions with test certificates for chemical resistance are available on request.

Fixing

Where there is vibration, sea motion and temperature change, screw fixing is often more robust than bonding alone. Bonding avoids drilling but requires a clean, dry substrate. Please coordinate any modifications to the structure with the shipyard, operator or classification society.

How your enquiry works

  1. Describe the situation: You tell us about the affected surfaces, steps or rungs, the substrate and the ambient conditions. Photos and rough dimensions help with the initial assessment.
  2. Agree the solution: We suggest suitable products, versions and fixing methods, and clarify any test certificates required at the same time.
  3. Receive a quotation: You receive an individual quotation with dimensions, quantities and specifications. Then you can decide at your leisure.

Frequently asked questions about offshore and shipbuilding anti-slip

Can anti-slip sheets for offshore platforms be fitted to existing gratings?

In many cases, yes. The sheets are screwed or bonded onto gratings or plates. Mesh size, load-bearing capacity and the condition of the substrate are decisive. We will clarify suitability based on your information.

Are slip-resistant GRP gratings an alternative to steel in shipbuilding?

GRP gratings are lighter than steel and do not corrode. Whether they are suitable for your application depends on load, span and requirements such as fire behaviour. Versions with corresponding test certificates are available on request.

Which anti-slip covering is right for ship decks?

That depends on the deck material, the load and the cleaning regime. Coatings are an option for large areas; for heavily used walkways, screw-fixed sheets are often used. We will advise you on the options.

How do walkways on offshore platforms stay non-slip in the long term?

Non-slip walkways are achieved with a grippy walking surface, secured edges and regular cleaning. In addition, the condition of the anti-slip surface should be included in the regular inspection of the installation.
