Slip Protection for Hospitals and Care Homes

In hospitals and care homes, patients, residents, visitors and staff all share the same floor areas. Frequent mopping, spilled liquids and wet areas increase the risk of slipping. Anti-slip solutions for hospitals and care homes must therefore combine safety, hygiene and smooth day-to-day operations.

This page is aimed at facility managers, technical services and purchasing departments in hospitals and care facilities. Antirutschprofi helps you choose slip-resistant products for corridors, stairs, sanitary areas and functional rooms. Advice for private households can be found on our page on anti-slip solutions for older people.

Long corridor in a hospital – slip protection for hospitals and care homes

Typical hazard areas in hospitals and care homes

  • Freshly mopped corridors during and after routine cleaning
  • Patient bathrooms, assisted bathrooms and shower areas
  • Ward kitchens, kitchenettes and dining rooms
  • Stairwells with smooth steps and poorly visible edges
  • Entrance areas where rain and snow are carried in
  • Transitions between different floor coverings
  • Outdoor stairs, ramps and access routes to emergency exits

Suitable anti-slip solutions for hospitals and care homes

Slip-resistant floors for care facilities

Smooth floor coverings can be retrofitted in various ways. For tiles, there is an anti-slip treatment that makes the surface grippier without replacing the floor covering. A trial area is recommended beforehand to check effectiveness, appearance and cleaning behaviour.

Anti-slip solutions for wet areas in hospitals

People often walk barefoot in showers, assisted bathrooms and changing rooms. Separate classes A, B and C apply here. Suitable solutions for these zones can be found under Slip-resistant barefoot and wet areas. Look for products that are compatible with your disinfectants.

Retrofitting hospital stairs to make them non-slip

Clearly visible, grippy step edges help people with impaired vision or an unsteady gait. Stair nosings in a contrasting colour can be fitted to existing stairs. Alternatively, anti-slip strips improve grip on the tread.

Handrails with a secure grip

For many patients and residents, handrails are the most important support. A handrail anti-slip cover improves grip, even with damp hands. Check whether the surface is compatible with your cleaning and disinfection plan.

Non-slip mats for care homes

Mats are suitable for entrance areas, kitchens and staff workstations. In areas used by residents, mats should lie flat and not form edges on which rollators or wheelchairs can catch. You will find an overview under Anti-slip mats.

Marking escape routes

Clear wayfinding is vital for evacuation. Photoluminescent escape route marking complements emergency lighting. Clarify the requirements with your fire safety officer.

Selection: what matters

Slip resistance: For staff work areas, ASR A1.5 “Floors” (German Technical Rule for Workplaces) and its Annex 2 provide guidance on slip resistance ratings R9 to R13. Barefoot areas are subject to classes A, B and C. The specific classification is determined by your risk assessment.

Substrate: Tiles, linoleum, PVC and natural stone react differently to treatments and adhesives. Clarify in advance which floor covering is installed and whether the floor manufacturer’s warranties are affected.

Cleaning: Hygiene takes priority in hospitals. A grippy surface must not make cleaning disproportionately difficult. Coordinate your choice with the infection control specialist and the cleaning service. Versions with test certificates for resistance to specific cleaning agents or disinfectants are available on request.

Fixing: Self-adhesive solutions can be applied quickly and with little noise. Screw-fixed profiles are more durable. In occupied areas, odour, dust and closure times play an important role.

Frequently asked questions: anti-slip for hospitals and care homes

How can a slip-resistant floor be achieved in care facilities without relaying it?

For tiles, an anti-slip treatment is possible. On other floor coverings, strips, coatings or mats are options. A trial area shows how the solution behaves with your cleaning regime.

How can hospital stairs be retrofitted to make them non-slip?

Stair nosings or anti-slip strips in a contrasting colour are common. They improve grip and the visibility of the steps. A handrail anti-slip cover can also be useful.

Which non-slip mats are suitable for care homes?

Flat mats without raised edges that are easy to clean. In residents’ areas, they should be easy to cross with rollators and wheelchairs. For kitchens and staff areas, robust workplace mats are available.

What anti-slip solutions are there for wet areas in hospitals?

For barefoot areas such as showers and assisted bathrooms, there are coverings, mats and treatments designed for classes A, B and C. Clarify compatibility with your disinfectants in advance.
